AI governance certification: for a person, an organisation, or neither

The main AI governance certifications as their issuers describe them, how a personal credential differs from an organisation's certificate and a course record, and how to choose.

AI governance certification means two different things. A person can earn a professional credential, such as the IAPP's Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP), by passing the issuer's exam. An organisation can hold certification against ISO/IEC 42001, an AI management system standard, by an external certification body. A course completion record is neither of these.

    three kinds of record

Three different things called an AI governance certificate

Search results mix three records that answer different questions. Decide which one you need before comparing names.

When you see 'ISO 42001' as a credential next to a person's name, ask which of the three records is meant and who issued it.

RecordWho holds itWho issues itWhat it showsWhat it does not show
Personal certificationAn individualA credentialing body, for example the IAPP or ISACA, after the person passes its examThat the person met the issuer's requirements for a defined body of knowledgeThat their employer governs its AI systems well
Organisational certificationAn organisation, for its AI management systemAn external certification body auditing against ISO/IEC 42001; ISO itself issues no certificatesThat the organisation's management system met the standard's requirements when auditedThat any individual employee is qualified
Course completion recordAn individual or a cohortWhoever ran the courseThat the person attended or completed that courseThat anyone outside the course provider assessed them against a published standard

Each credential is described only as its issuer's own page describes it. For prerequisites, exam fees and renewal rules, see the issuer's page in each row. We do not rank these credentials or the providers that train for them.

Hiring a consultant rather than choosing a credential for yourself? Our page on what certifications an AI governance consultant should have for insurance clients covers that question.

The IAPP AI governance professional certification (AIGP)

IAPP's page says the AIGP covers AI systems and responsible AI principles, how current and emerging laws apply to AI, the AI life cycle and how AI risk is managed, and debated issues in AI governance. IAPP publishes an AIGP Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint listing what the exam covers. Anyone searching for a 'certified AI governance professional' is looking for this credential.

ISO/IEC 42001: certification of the organisation, not the person

ISO describes ISO/IEC 42001 as a standard that specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an AI management system within organisations. ISO states that it does not perform certification or issue certificates; external certification bodies do. Accreditation of those bodies is not compulsory, so ISO suggests checking it, and a certificate can be verified through the IAF CertSearch database or with the body that issued it.

Is there a NIST AI risk management framework certification?

NIST's AI RMF page describes a framework intended for voluntary use, released in 2023, with a companion Playbook. The page lists no NIST certification. A course called a NIST AI RMF certification is issued by whoever runs the course, so ask who that is and what it assesses.

Securiti AI Security & Governance certification

A course with a final exam, run by Securiti on its own education site and including Securiti's own approach to AI governance; it is issued by a company, not a standards or credentialing body.

    how to choose

How to choose an AI governance certification

Choose by the decision the credential has to support, not by the name.

Is there a best AI governance certification?

Not one that fits every role. A privacy lawyer, an internal auditor and a security manager need different depth. We do not rank them or the training providers that prepare people for them. Our page on AI governance roles describes what the job involves day to day.

    1. 1. Decide whose capability you are proving

If a customer or auditor asks how your organisation manages AI, a personal credential does not answer it; an ISO/IEC 42001 certificate or your own documented program does. If a hiring manager asks what a person knows, a personal credential can.

    2. 2. Match the credential to the job

A broad governance role points to a governance credential such as the AIGP. Audit work points to AAIA, risk work to AAIR, security management to AAISM. Read each issuer's body of knowledge against the tasks the role actually performs.

    3. 3. Check prerequisites before you plan

The ISACA credentials require an existing designation such as CISA, CISM or CISSP. Others list none. The issuer's page is the only reliable source for current eligibility and fees.

    4. 4. Check who issues it and how it is verified

A credentialing body, a certification body, a software vendor and a training provider are different issuers. For an organisation's certificate, confirm the certification body and its accreditation.

    what certification does not do

What an AI governance and compliance certification does not do

A person holding a certification is not a governed AI program. A credential shows what someone has studied; it does not decide which AI systems your organisation may use or who answers for each one.

In healthcare, life sciences, financial services and insurance, the work is concrete: an inventory of AI systems, a risk tier and named owner for each, an approval path before anything goes live, monitoring, and records that show the rules were followed. Our guide to building an AI governance framework walks through those pieces.

We write the rules to the policy and frameworks you already answer to, such as HIPAA, the NAIC Model Bulletin, the NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001 or the EU AI Act. We are not a certifying body, we do not certify compliance, and nothing on this page should be read as a statement of what a regulator requires of any credential.

    where kriv fits

Where Kriv AI fits: governance capability, not certification

Kriv AI issues no certification and does not certify organisations. This page makes no claim that Kriv AI staff hold any of the credentials above. We train teams and build governance programs.

Who this is not for: individuals studying for an exam. Kriv AI contracts with organisations, which name the people who attend, and there are no individual seats; for exam preparation, start with the issuer's page. See our AI training for employees page and our AI governance consulting services page.

Kriv AI sends a senior practitioner who both scopes and delivers: no handoffs, no bench, no discovery theater.

Partner credentials, in the exact wording each program allows: Claude Partner Network, Select partner · Services Track (program details at claude.com/partners; written confirmation from the Claude Partner Network team available on request). OpenAI Partner Network · Select tier. Solutions Partner for Cloud & AI Platforms · Partner ID 7036589. Databricks partner. AWS Marketplace seller, 59 live listings. These are company partner credentials, not personal AI governance certifications.

    1. 1. AI Adoption and Risk for Managers

An instructor-led course on which tasks suit AI, the risks that matter, the components of a workplace AI policy and planning a staged rollout with review points.

    2. 2. Safe AI Use in Regulated Workplaces

Classifying information by sensitivity, how confidential information leaks into AI tools, de-identification, and when to escalate. In the course page's own words, it is not a HIPAA, privacy or compliance certification.

    3. 3. Claude Foundations & Governance

A module of our Claude AI Enterprise Training program, for teams that have licensed Claude and need usage rules alongside the skill.

    4. 4. AI governance consulting

Building the inventory, risk tiers, review workflow and monitoring against the frameworks you answer to, so the program runs after the engagement ends.

    Straight answers

Frequently asked questions about AI governance certification: for a person, an organisation, or neither

What is the IAPP AI governance professional certification?

The AIGP, Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional, is a personal certification from the IAPP. IAPP says it demonstrates competency in AI development, ethical AI deployment and best practices in AI management. Candidates pass an exam whose scope is set out in IAPP's AIGP Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint. For eligibility, exam fees and renewal, see the AIGP page on iapp.org.

Can a company get ISO/IEC 42001 certification, and who certifies it?

Yes. ISO/IEC 42001 specifies requirements for an organisation's AI management system, and an organisation can hold certification against it. ISO states that it does not perform certification or issue certificates; external certification bodies do. Accreditation of those bodies is not compulsory, so check it, and verify a certificate through IAF CertSearch or the issuing body.

Is there a NIST AI risk management framework certification?

NIST's AI RMF page describes the framework as intended for voluntary use and lists no NIST certification. A course called a NIST AI RMF certification is issued by whoever runs the course, so ask who that is and what it assesses. An organisation can use the framework without any certificate.

What is the best AI governance certification?

There is no single best one; it depends on the job. The AIGP is a broad AI governance credential. ISACA's AAIA, AAIR and AAISM are aimed at audit, risk and security professionals who already hold a qualifying designation. ISO/IEC 42001 certifies an organisation, not a person. Read each issuer's body of knowledge against the role's real tasks. We do not rank them.

What is an AI governance risk and compliance certification?

No single credential carries that exact name. On the issuers' own pages, ISACA's AAIR covers AI enterprise governance, AI life cycle risk management and AI risk program management, and AAIA covers AI governance and risk, AI operations and AI auditing. The AIGP covers how laws and frameworks apply to AI. Compare each against the work the role does.

Is an AI governance certificate from a course the same as a certification?

Not necessarily. A course certificate records that someone completed that course, and the course provider issues it. A professional certification is issued by a credentialing body against a published body of knowledge, after an exam. Ask who issued the record and what, if anything, was assessed.

Does Kriv AI offer an AI governance certification?

No. Kriv AI issues no certification and does not certify organisations. We run instructor-led training for organisations, such as AI Adoption and Risk for Managers and Safe AI Use in Regulated Workplaces, and AI governance consulting that builds the inventory, owners, review workflow and monitoring a program needs. For exam preparation, go to the issuer's page.

How much does AI governance certification cost?

Exam fees, membership discounts and renewal terms are set by each issuer and change, so see the issuer's page: iapp.org for the AIGP, isaca.org for AAIA, AAIR and AAISM, and the certification body you choose for ISO/IEC 42001. Kriv AI's training and consulting are scoped and priced after a short discovery call.
